Pura Luhur Uluwatu: Bali's cliff-edge temple in Pecatu

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a Balinese Hindu temple situated on a limestone promontory above the Indian Ocean in Pecatu, on Bali’s south-western Bukit Peninsula. The complex features temple courtyards, split gates, and shrines, with dark palm-fibre roofing contrasting against pale limestone and the ocean. Religious structures have been present at the site since at least the tenth century, with its history extending into the sixteenth century, associated with Mpu Kuturan and Dang Hyang Nirartha. The temple is linked to the Sad Kahyangan, a group of major Balinese temples, and its religious identity is connected with Rudra. Dang Hyang Nirartha, an important figure in Balinese Hindu history, is traditionally believed to have reached moksha at the Uluwatu cliff. The site remains an active place of worship, combining a sacred precinct with an exposed coastal landscape. Visitors should be aware that paths include steps, uneven stone surfaces, and exposed edges. The official language is Indonesian and the currency is the Indonesian rupiah.
