Tourism has potential to slow coral decline at Bali travel hotspot: Study

A new study in Bali indicates that coral reefs in Sanur, a major tourism hub, continue to decline despite rehabilitation efforts. The research, published in Ocean & Coastal Management, found that restoration initiatives often proceed without addressing underlying issues like sediment runoff and wastewater discharge. The study highlights uncoordinated governance systems, leading to slow decision-making and wasted resources. Researchers recommend a more collaborative approach to reef protection. While tourism contributes to reef threats, it also offers a viable way to promote, implement, and fund solutions. Sanur's local economy relies on tourism, and interviewees suggested the industry could support reef solutions if revenues are reinvested into conservation. The study's ecological analysis revealed Sanur's reefs are in a "moderately to severely degraded" state, with extensive branching reefs transforming into "rubble fields." Lead author Min Chung, a master’s student at the University of Tokyo, emphasized that addressing fundamental drivers of coral loss is more effective than focusing solely on visible impacts. Zach Boakes, co-founder of North Bali Reef Conservation, noted that tourism is both a major pressure and opportunity for Bali's reefs, attracting significant financial support for restoration. He stressed that restoration should not replace addressing root causes like poor water quality and climate change, which remains the biggest threat to coral reefs globally.
