New Nusa Penida levy sparks tourist trip cancellations

A recently introduced tourism levy in Nusa Penida has led to tourist trip cancellations, with local operators reporting that visitors are calling off itineraries after learning of an additional Rp25,000 around US$1.50 charge for each attraction. One group of 47 tourists canceled their trip, which would have incurred an extra Rp4.7 million. The Klungkung chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association PHRI has received multiple cancellation reports since the regency began implementing its One Gate One Destination OGOD levy scheme. Chairman I Putu Darmaya stated that tour operators find it difficult to explain the new fee, as many packages were sold as all-inclusive before the policy took effect. Visitors are questioning why they are paying more when road conditions and tourism infrastructure have not improved. PHRI plans to meet with the Klungkung administration to discuss the issue. Klungkung Tourism Office head I Gusti Agung Gede Putra Mahajaya confirmed the levy is mandated under Regional Regulation Perda No. 4 of 2026, which came into effect on August 1. He noted that feedback is being collected during a public socialisation period until August 12. PHRI has urged the government to prioritize upgrading roads and facilities and provide transparency on how levy revenue will be used.
