New details emerge about Australian father's life before Bali murder-suicide

An Australian father, Damien John Shaw, accused of murdering his two children before taking his own life in Bali, was described by a family source as "arrogant" and routinely made unkind remarks about his children to school staff. Police found the bodies of Shaw, his six-year-old son Archie, and four-year-old daughter Laura in a Kuta home. The children were reportedly strangled by their 56-year-old father, an unemployed maritime worker from Fremantle, who had previously expressed suicidal intentions. Despite his involvement in their daily care, Shaw allegedly told teachers that Archie and Laura were "stupid." Staff at Archie's school found this odd, as they considered Archie to be polite and intelligent. The family was reportedly dysfunctional, with frequent conflicts attributed to Shaw's anxiety, emotional outbursts, and quick temper. Legal proceedings for a divorce in 2022 were halted after Shaw threatened self-harm. Police are investigating potential financial losses as a motive. Shaw's wife had left him with the children to visit her parents in Jakarta a week before the incident. Forensic autopsies were not performed at the wife's request after CCTV footage confirmed Shaw murdered his children before his suicide. The bodies were buried at an Islamic cemetery in Kampung Jawa.
