Australian expat discusses the 'Bali ceiling' after two years of living on the island

Phoebe Aston, an Australian expat, has lived in Bali for two years, primarily in Canggu, and recently reached what she calls her "Bali ceiling." While acknowledging Bali's appeal with its lower cost of living, relaxed atmosphere, and scenic beauty, she notes that living there differs significantly from visiting. Aston, a fitness coach, moved to Bali to escape her routine in Adelaide. She observes that many expats eventually experience a similar feeling, regardless of how long they've been on the island. She states that Bali is a place where people come to build, heal, or run away, and for her, the island's initial allure has faded. Approximately 10,000 Australians currently reside in Bali, many drawn to the digital nomad lifestyle due to the lower cost of living; for example, Aston pays $1,500 per month for a two-bedroom villa with a pool. However, she finds the constant presence of nomads seeking clients to be "exhausting" and notes the difficulty in forming lasting friendships due to the transient nature of the expat community. A significant factor in her decision to leave is the increasing pollution and rubbish she observes, stating, "Just going for a walk, and there's rubbish everywhere, and dogs everywhere." A Yahoo Lifestyle poll indicated that 45 percent of nearly 4,000 readers felt Bali had become "dirty and overrun." Aston advises prospective expats that Bali is not for everyone and can be challenging if one is not careful. She plans to move to Dubai in September.
